The Shak Freestar is technically loaded without compromising versatility. Built with the same 21 micron New Zeland Merino wool, the Shak Freestar is cut to allow for a full range of motion, fits well under a shell for climbing, cycling and skiing and adds in thumbholes for a secure fit no matter what you take on. Yeah it looks great, just don’t call the Freestar “fashionable,” it demands more than that.

We start with the best New Zealand Merino wool to make a range of insulative yet breathable midlayers that outdoor enthusiasts swear by. This exclusive weave is square and dense, creating a rugged yet soft knit with inherent stretch and long-wearing durability. Our Shak fabric is best used as a midlayer but is soft enough to wear as an expedition-weight baselayer and substantial enough to be used as an outerlayer in some conditions. No matter how you wear it, the performance is unbeatable. Machine washable.

Absolutely love this for winter running. Collar adds protection; full zip ventilation. The sleeves with thumbholes give enough protection to forego gloves, except on frigid days (when I add the lightweight merino liners). I wear it with a woolies underneath. Love the fit. I'm 5' 3", lean, but with pretty broad shoulders and the XS fits great. I bought the black/grey and it is gorgeous! I ha
I absolutely love this jacket ! I would buy one in every color if they would suit me ... unfortunately not. I work, play and relax in this jacket and highly recommend it. The fit is very flattering!!!!
The Freestar features an athletic fit and is great for cold weather cycling, running, climbing, x-country skiing and similar vigorous outdoor activities. For cycling, I wear this over a baselayer. Back pockets would have been a great addition to this piece for cycling. Because of its slim, athletic fit, I would not wear this to work or when trying to look dressy. The workmanship, fabric, stitchin
This was the Christmas gift I had most wanted to receive! I've already worn it traveling, lounging around the house (including all Christmas morning), running in 20 degree temperatures, walking to the store (in the same kind of cold) and roller skating with my daughter. It is warm, fits well and looks incredibly flattering. One comment... I got the Royal Purple/Snow color combo. The Snow is n
Have just returned from a ski trip where I wore this every day - other sweaters didn't even make it out of the suitcase! Fits very well - fitted enough to layer under a jacket, not so fitted that I can't layer two other Ibex pieces underneath (a long sleeve T and my Zepher, another favorite) - I like to be warm! Length is perfect, t-neck is perfect, design is great, thumb loops rock! If it came in
I have two other similar pieces, both of which I love. I sized up for a slightly more relaxed fit, gaining some sleeve length which is really nice with my long arms. A great item for the shoulder seasons, and I wear it often for early-morning rows in the summer. Great as a light-weight sweater or jacket. I really like the older version of this item that is slightly softer, lighter-weight, and
This shak is my go to top for cold weather sport mid layer and mild weather sport top layer - no better running top for wicking and temperature regulation. perfect mid layer for skiing, ice climbing. Great for back country as it doesnt retain odor over consecutive days of use, unlike artificial fibers. Fit is great, colors bright, washes well. favorite item.
Upon receiving pictures of my wife from Spain where she was visiting her son showing her in her Shak Freestar and the email announcing Ibex's sale, buying her another for her returning home gift was a "no-brainer". Perfect for cool and or wet weather, under a shell, or just around the house or out for casual dinners, etc. And, assembled in the USofA...
Works well as a mid layer or outer layer to stay warm. The thumbholes make it a perfect layer for biking (my wrists stay warm). Paired with a thin base layer and a jacket, make it perfect for biking in colder climates. I never overheat wearing this top, yet it keeps me warm. And it is super cute!
The medium fits me well (I'm 5'6'' and 125 lb.) and isn't too snug. A small may have been more f
I love my Shaks, and this is basically a Shak with a zipper. It has the same heavy/thick yet soft feel to it, and the same body conscious yet never tight fit. I think the sleeves are a little long, but I am pretty short and it is very nice to use the thumbholes without feeling like you are stretching the sleeves or straining your thumbs!
I have worn this around the house with jeans, and also on
Very well made (I've come to expect this from Ibex), stylish and extremely comfortable. I've worn this cross-country skiing this winter and it did a wonderful job regulating my core temperature when worn under a shell. And it fits perfectly, too!
In in a closet of Shak full-zip and 1/4 zip, the Freestar is my new favorite. It is the perfect weight and gives excellent temperature regulation. The cut is form-fitting; the color blocking very flattering. I love the Ibex logo centered on the upper back. Works well for activities, and looks great for casual events. It is my go-to piece this winter (Boston, MA).
My favorite use is as a mid layer, under my ski jacket, when skiing. However, I use it at other times as well. I bought two of these sweaters two seasons ago. I wanted another last year, but Ibex did not have this style. I am so glad Ibex brought it back!!!
This Shak freestar was a gift to my wife. Part of the reason behind the gift was so that she wouldn't miss me taking my Shak Lite back. Well now she has her own Shak and of course it fits much better on her than mine ever did. I like her looking sporty and sexy. She likes style, comfort and warmth. This piece does it all.
This is my go to for cold weather high output activities. It's warm, but not bulky. It slides easily over a layer, and fits nicely under a layer when needed. It also looks nice for street wear. I've worn it with everything from skirts to jeans. Washes well. I'm 5'-2"/100# wearing an XS.
This is by far my favorite Ibex item!! I wear it almost everyday. The thumb-holes are great because I can put gloves on over them and not have to worry about there being an air gap. Only change I would make is having hand pockets, but even without it's because my favorite piece of clothing!
I got this as a gift and I love it. I use this almost everyday. It is so comfortable and great at temperature regulation. Stylish enough for around town, but rugged enough to wear skiing, climbing, hiking etc... I've worn mine so much I have worn a hole in it. I'm just about to order another one. I just can't get enough!
This is a great fit. Sleeves are a nice length with thumb loops in the right place for my arms. I'm 5'8" and have a large. I wear it while hiking, running, and snowshoeing, as a mid-layer. Love it on these January days!
Shaks are great. I have an old one (a few years old) that I still love. I think IBEX changed the fabric a bit and it's even better now. The fabric is more snugly and soft... and warm. The little pocked is great for an iPod. The price is not cheap but I think IBEX is the best merino wool on the market and it's made in the US not in China (I think that may be the reason for the better quality). I l
This has quickly become my favorite winter running shirt! The weight is perfect! It keeps me warm, but also breaths so I don't 'over heat' a few miles into a run. It's nice looking to boot! And I had no trouble washing it. It didn't shrink or loose it's shape in any way.
Great sweater/jacket for indoor winter wear and medium-light outdoor layer. Fits trimly -- base layer underneath -- got a Small for 5-2" 113 lbs. Size up if you'd want a heavier layer underneath. Looks beautiful. I like to hand-wash my other shak, but when pressed it does great in the washer.
Love this jacket. I highly recommend it. I wear it more often than not. Would love to get another in a different color. The only thing that I am concerned about is that the light color is on the inside collar side versus the dark. The men's freestar as the dark color closer to the neck and I prefer that more.
This garment is perfect layering. I like to wear a longsleeved shirt underneath. On cold days I can add a wool vest without feeling bulked up. I love the full zip and the two tone blue colors are flattering. I would have returned it for the next larger size, but it was sold out. I decided to keep the smaller size, and that was a good decision.
I am 5'10" tall and weigh 145, and wear medium for most items. With Ibex, I always move up to the Large because of my long arms and need to not feel compressed. This sweater feels best with a lightweight polypro or similar garment under it. Colors are beautiful.
This jacket will be used as an outer or mid layer workout piece. On occasion, it will serve as a casual sweater. It was used during a vigorous snowshoeing workout as a midlayer. It kept me warm in the mid 20s temperature. The hobo sleeves were long and kept my hands protected enough for snowshoe adjustments while gloves were off. It was also used as a casual sweater. The sleeves needed to be
I bought this Shak because of the color; that thistle heather is terrific! The thumbholes were a neat design element also. What a disappointment, though, when I tried it on and it didn't fit right. Even with only a Woolies zipneck underneath as a base layer, this jacket was way too tight through the shoulders and arms for it to be comfortable. My shoulders are broader than the design with its
...if you want to wear this. It fit me fine through the body and the sleeves were long enough for my longish arms (yay!). But it pulled across the shoulders, as to be unwearable. Also, the gray in the purple/gray combo is really more of a slightly tan, putty color. Not quite as pretty as I'd imagined. So it went back.
