We start with the best New Zealand Merino wool to make a range of insulative yet breathable midlayers that outdoor enthusiasts swear by. This exclusive knit is square and dense, creating a rugged yet soft fabric with inherent stretch and long-wearing durability. Our Shak fabric is best used as a midlayer but is soft enough to wear as an expedition-weight baselayer and substantial enough to be used as an outerlayer in some conditions. No matter how you wear it, the performance is unbeatable. Machine washable.

How Do I Determine My Size?

We recommend a general body measurement guide to determine your size in Ibex clothing. This sizing chart is not garment specific, but in fact a body measurement chart. Here are some helpful hints when measuring:

Bust/Chest: relax arms at sides, keeping the tape parallel to the floor, measure the fullest part of your bust/chest
Waist: keeping the measuring tape comfortably loose, measure around your natural waistline
Hips: standing with heels together, keep the tape straight and parallel to the floor, measure around the fullest part of hips
Sleeve Length: a 3-point measurement, standing with arms relaxed and slightly bent at sides, measure from the base of the neck to the shoulder and then from the shoulder to the wrist bone, add together measurements
Form-fit: garment designed to fit snug to the body throughout
Semi-fit: garment will be contoured to the body
Regular-fit: garment will not be slim, but also not oversized
Relaxed-fit: garment drapes loosely on body

The additional 20% off (bringing the Pro price to $79) was too good to resist. In my work, I'm back and forth, inside and outside in cold weather at a number of small airports in Colorado. The Shak is perfect for this.

A gift for my father. I already own one and think he will love it. Great product!

This seems like a similar Ibex sweater that I like a lot and has started to show some wear. I use the old one as a mid layer often, with thumb holes on the sleeves nice on really cold ski days. Also ware around the house or at work to stay warm. I like this new item's color (red) and it was on sale in the spring.

I own a Shak full-zip hoody, which I absolutely love & is my go-to base layer. I wanted to add another ibex item to my current selection of wool clothing.

I wanted something casual and stylish that would also be comfortable doing anything from cycling to casual dressy occasions. This is perfect.

Looking to replace my 'plastic' fleece with wool and this seemed to fit the bill.

The quality, warmth, and comfort are simply awesome. I have one in black and I love wearing it. I wanted the blue. I would also have bought the red-ant, but it was not longer available.

Very happy with this style of shirt. Versatile and of particular value is the vertical zipper chest pocket which is perfect for a phone.

I own the Shak Classic in black. It is understated fashion that substitutes for a sports coat for business meetings, travel and long days in the office. I'm buying a different color just to mix it up.

I have had a Shak ½ zip for many years (it was my first Ibex purchase) and it is wearing out after only a zillion trips through the washing machine (I've used Cold water, delicate cycle, Woolite and kept it out of the dryer- it has never had any significant shrinkage) Can't beat that kind of durability in a sweater that is very comfortable and works over a range of temperatures.

My husband is 6' and 170 lbs. Should I order him a Large or a Medium?
Roberta S on Jul 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I am 6' foot and 178 and a large fits me perfectly. If he likes his clothing tight, that would be the only reason to consider a medium. What size does he typically prefer? I aleays wear a large and found that Ibex runs true to size. He'll love the shak, very comfortable AND functional!
Do/will you ever make a shak with side zip pockets? I love the look and the semi fit cut, but really like having hand zipper pockets. I think this would essentially be the shak traverse for men. I would buy several.
Jack H on Mar 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi, I will definitely pass that idea along to the design team. I agree that pockets are pretty useful!
I am 5'10" and 150 lb. What size shake do you recommend?
A shopper on May 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I'm 5'8"/165 w/42" chest and 34.5" waist. My M Shak is snug in the chest and space at the waist. My L Shak it's room for even mid layer and certainly a base layer. My point: worn as a stand alone shirt (think: hiking and backpacking), the M would fit snug and move as one with the wearer; the L would work best for a loose layer or mid layer.
Does the red shak classic have the logo on the right sleeve just above the wrist area?
Robertg C on Mar 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Robert, yes, on the Shak Classic the logo is on the sleeve. I believe it has been on the mid back near the collar in the past.
when are other colors than black available?
John F on May 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The Men's Shak Classic is our heavier weighted Shak and is more prominently offered in our fall/winter line. During the summer we only offer it in the Black but when the fall line is launched in September it will be available in four colors: Black, Pewter Heather, Red Ant and Blueprint. Thank you for your question.

Love shak but it seems Ibex changed fit
I agree with Toby that past Shak jackets had a better fit. Just bought this one a few months ago and there is a flap on the sides in the middle. I usually take an Xl and it fits great - now its too big and not form fitting at all. [...]

Great material poor fit
Great idea and good weight for shirt, but very poor fit for a shirt that was supposed to be semi fitted. I am 6'1 175lbs and the size medium shirt was to short in the sleeves and torso. The fit was ok in chest but to baggy at the waist.

two things. . .
I try to buy a couple of Shaks a year and until this batch they have been just terrific - the most brilliant things I have ever worn - but the two I have just bought flap around my middle and look just ordinary. Have you changed the dimensions? If so why?

And why no XL in the triathlon red, can I just ask? It is a beautiful colour and I'd still buy one and have it taken in if you have changed the

Wooly comfort
Got both the Shak Lite and Shak classic jersey for Christmas. Both are great and very comfortable but with different fabric feel and fit from the cut. Got both in size M which is great for me (6', 170 lbs).
Shak Lite is a little more regular fit and I prefer it for more casual wear. It is a little lighter weight (not much) so better for more activity or not-so-cold weather. Texture of the fabric is smooth.
Shak classic is a little more form fitting and I probably wouldn't comfortably wear a long sleeve layer underneath due to the fitted arms. But my wife likes it for me to wear out to dinner and for a more stylish fit. Fabric is a little more textured.
Would definitely recommend both the Shak Classic and Shak Lite. If you like a more fitted cut and want to look more stylish go with Shak Classic. If you want a more regular-fit cutt that is a little more casual & (slightly) lighter weight go with Shak Lite.

Want my old shak back
I have an older full zip shak that I've worn so often I've worn holes in the sleeves. It's been by far the best technical wool piece I've owned. This new shak just doesn't have the same fit. The body is now constructed out of fewer peices, making it much more boxy and less amenable to layering. I know it probably kept costs down, but I'd rather pay a bit more and keep the fit.

Great Sweater Replacement
Love this as a sweater replacement. Sleeves are a touch longer, which I actually like. At least they can cover the base layer instead of riding up like so many jackets do.

Fit is accurate to what is noted in the sizing. at 6'2" and 190# the large is just about right for me. But if one were over 200#, or quite muscular in the arms and chest, you might find the large a little constricting.

Great all-around sweater
I use Shak almost daily in the fall and winter. It fits well and offers the right amount of warmth for Northern California. I have two Shaks, one small and one medium. I am 5'7 and 147 lbs; I use the small when using one thin layer and the medium when using more substantial baselayers.

Great, versatile layer.
I bought the Shak Classic for a thin, warm layer that I could wear underneath a jacket. I'm very happy with it, although there are a few things I wish were different.

Feel: It's merino wool, so it feels amazing. It's incredibly soft and flexible.

Fit: I'm 5' 10" and 175lbs, and it fits perfectly as an inner layer: relatively close fitting so that it's easy to wear other items over it, but also not so tight that it looks like it's only athletic. It's also slightly stretchy, which makes it fit even better.

Style: Just as with the fit, it's versatile. Good for exercise, but also for casual wear.

Weight/size: Compared to fleece or cotton, it weighs more but takes up less space. It's really good for layering unless you're worried about weight.

Warmth: I was a little disappointed, since it's supposed to be 280 weight. I was hoping for a fleece-like jacket that wouldn't stink after sweating in it, and the latter is true, but I wish it were warmer on its own. I'd probably feel comfortable in it sitting at 65 degrees, slowly walking around at 55-60, hiking 45-50, and running 20-30.

Wind resistance: None. It's not marketed as having it, so I can't fault Ibex for it. But wow. If it's windy, I need a lot more than the Shak to keep me warm. Thankfully the Shak is great as a layer anyway, so it's easy to put a wind-resistant layer on top it to fix the problem.

To summarize, I love the fit, feel, and versatility, and I only wish it were a tad warmer and somewhat wind resistant. I wear mine several times a week and love it.

Same as it ever was (mostly)
I bought my first Shak ages ago and have almost worn it down to nothing. So finally, I decided it was time from a replacement even though I am still hanging onto the old one. The new one has the same weight, the same thickness, quality, warmth, etc so overall I am quite pleased. The one exception is the cut in the waste. The old one was more fitted in the waste and this one is a bit baggier. I prefer the old cut better.

Men's full zip is a great garment
I'm very happy with the men's full zip shak classic. The fabric weight is very versatile and the fit is excellent. I have worn it in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions and I love the combination of "just right" warmth and breathability. It works well for a casual day in the office as well as a hike with the dog. I don't normally carry my cell phone in a shirt but the chest pocket is useful for that when needed.
